Sonic T-Amp and Airtunes

The Sonic T-Amp

After hunting around for a while I've finally managed to get hold of a Sonic T-Amp for an upcoming DIY project of mine to extend my Airtunes music streaming in the home.

These amplifiers are no longer sold or manufactured but I've sourced one on eBay for around £35 and the plan is to get this up in the loft attached to some ceiling speakers, plug a spare Airport Express I have into the T-Amp's 3.5mm jack and start piping music via iTunes into the bathroom. I can't wait to get started.

Cerulean RX and the iPhone 3GS

The iSkin Cerulean RX connected to a standard iPod dock connector

My in car iPod connection just got a whole lot smarter recently. It's frustrated me for a while that the iPod dock connector that's fitted into my car stereo wasn't fully compatible with my iPhone, being a cable and connector that was only compatible with older iPods it wouldn't charge the iPhone when docked.

After doing a bit of research I found a perfect option, the iSkin Cerulean RX.

It's a bluetooth receiver that fits onto a standard iPod dock connector and allows A2DP stereo bluetooth streaming from a compatible device, in this case my iPhone 3GS.

Streaming The XX on the iPhone 3GS

Once connected to my iPhone, within the iPod application the volume bar is replaced by the bluetooth device I'm streaming to and a bluetooth symbol appears (as seen above).

The sound quality is extremely good, there is no real noticeable distortion and as an added bonus I can get my Sat Nav software to give me instructions through the stereo using the device, getting around the poor external speaker the iPhone's have that is particularly annoying with Sat Nav Apps.

I'm also pleasantly suprised to find out that I can stream music to the Cerulean RX and also have a bluetooth headset connected at the same time, the iPhone is smart enough to cut out the music and root calls to the headset and once the call is ended it starts playing the music back through the stereo again. Perfect.

Happy Apple Christmas

I can't help but admire Apple's style, it's been like that since around mid-2003 when i purchased my first iPod and what was then Apple's 3rd generation version of the iconic music player. At that point I was pretty much a convert, now to a point where I've a growing collection of Apple hardware and continue to get excited by every new rumuor and release.

Apple Gifts for 2009

So this Christmas, with people recognising that fact,  I was given even more in the way of Apple related gifts. Aside from receiving iTunes vouchers I was also lucky enough to receive some quite lovely cufflinks from my fiancée;

iPhone Cufflinks, my Christmas gift for 2009

Shaped and styled like a pair of silver plated iPhone's, I think they are great. I wear cufflinks regularly, they can express the type of person you are or how your feeling on a particular day and these sum me up perfectly. There are a few variants of iPhone styled cufflinks available but these are one of the nicer pairs in my opinion, I particularly like the silver frame representing the iPhone casing, it makes them stand out just a little bit more. I'll be wearing them quiet a lot in 2010.

The new Apple Remote

I was given the new Apple Remote and it's just perfect in it's simplicity. It's build quality is amazing, particularly at the price it goes for. Gone is the white plastic remote and the annoying 'clicking' that it makes with every press, this remote is silent when operated, feels great in the hand too and nicely matches my AppleTV and MacBook Pro with it's aluminium unibody look and black buttons. I taken close up photographs of both these items using my Nikon P6000, and larger versions can be found over on my Flickr site for closer inspection.

Apple in 2010

I can't wait to see what Apple bring along in 2010. There is now a very strong rumour that they will be releasing their own Tablet (the Apple Slate?) in late January and this is going to be interesting.

People are saying it will change technology again, just as the iPhone did. I'm hoping it's an advancement in terms of interface to the current iPhone OS as I think that is in need of a slight refresh. Some of the competitors to the iPhone (Android, Palm OS and HTC's skinned Windows Mobile) all make use of widgets on the home screens, i would love to see something like this within the iSlate and potentially rolled out to the iPhone next summer, something that shows the latest weather, news, Twitter or Facebook feeds would be really nice.

The new iPhone will likely be released (as every year) around June time and I've read it will coincide with the release date of the original iPhone. Seeing that o2 are trialling 4G in the UK at the moment, it may well support the latest in mobile internet speeds, along with a front facing camera (particularly seeing that a lot of video streaming Apps have come about as late on the App Store).

I'd also dearly love to see a BluRay drive for the AppleTV, it's the only thing I feel that it misses to be a true home media entertainment device, although this is the least likely of them all i feel. One thing is for certain however, my admiration of all things Apple looks set to continue into what will be an exciting tech related 2010.

Apple’s Magic Mouse finally arrives

Apple's New Magic Mouse

I finally got my hands on the new Magic Mouse last weekend (Apple must rub their hands in glee when it's my birthday) and all i can say is 'it's amazing'.

I've never been so impressed with something that is, well,  just a mouse at the end of the day. The build quality is second to none, it feels solid, with an almost ceramic feel to it  and even the aluminium underside matches my MacBook Pro. (The usual Apple attention to detail is outstanding).

What's even more impressive is the way you scroll on the Mac using it. It works exactly the same way as the iPhone touch screen.  When in Safari for example, the quicker you glide your finger down the top of the mouse, the quicker Safari scrolls, and vice versa, i find i do it just to see it working.

It's just sublime to use and even the packaging it came in was up to Apple's usual standard, a minimal clear plastic casing to show it off as soon as you open the packet. So yes, to say i'm pleased would be an understatement but what next on my Apple shopping list?

Stream Spotify & BLIP.FM to multiple speakers

airportexpress

I am sometimes suprised that people don’t realise what certain bits of Apple kit can do, particularly around their home media setup.Airport Express and AirTunes The Airport Express is more than just a wireless access point, it’s pure classic Apple in it’s simplicity and power and for me it’s most unique feature is AirTunes. I have an Airport Express at home so that i can stream my music from iTunes to my home cinema system (downstairs in the living room). The Airport Express is plugged into the wall behind my TV with a stereo jack out the back and into the surround system

Remote App for iPhone/iPod Touch

The real fun however comes from using the free Remote App for the iPhone/iPod Touch, I can sit comfortably anywhere in the house, attach my iPhone to my home network and stream my entire iTunes library to my living room stereo.

The Remote app works pretty much like the iPod application that’s built into the iPhone/Touch. It has Genius functionality, track ratings and (in the case of my setup) I have the Last.fm app running in the background on my MacBook Pro, so any track I play via the iPhone is still scrobbled to my Last.fm page in real time.

Apple limit what you can stream to the Airport Express to only iTunes music but I’ve recently took my wireless streaming a step further I’ve been trialling Airfoil by Rogue Amoeba so that I’m now in a position to stream music from other great media software and websites (Spotify and Blip.fm for example). Airfoil basically hijacks your Mac or Windows PC sound output and lets you redirect it to the speakers plugged into your Airport Express.

airfoil

Upon launching Airfoil I tell it which application to hijack (Spotify has been hijacked here, but for Blip.fm I would select my default browser as the application), play some tracks from the relevant music software and downstairs in the living room there is streaming music outside of the iTunes application.
